The national accreditation system was created by Law 30/1992 as a guarantee to the public that the institutions in the system comply with the highest standards and achieve their purposes and objectives.
Accreditation is a form of recognition afforded by the State related to the quality of a program or institution, based on an evaluation made by the institutions, academic communities and the accreditation council CNA. During 2000, the University started activities for national accreditation of its undergraduate programs. By the end of 2002, it had accredited 53.85 per cent, and the University has the best average number of years of accreditation of its programs. Further, it has the second largest number of accredited university programs in Colombia.
The Political Science Program is the only one accredited among the faculties of its kind in Colombia. The programs of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Business Management have the longest period of accreditation granted. In the state examinations, Mechanical Engineering occupied the first place, and Law second place.
The following are the statistics of accreditation of the five universities which in July 2003 had the largest number of accredited programs. This is followed by a list of the University´s programs which have so far achieved this recognition from the accreditation council CNA.
